PostSubject: My First Visit to the Church Meeting   14/05/17, 02:19 pm

I managed to drag Aimee out of bed this morning to honour her promise to take me to the church meeting.  I am sure she regretted offering as she didn't go to bed until late last night.

I felt a bit mean having her take me so if I do go again before I move back to the flat, and while I am still living here, I will make other arrangements to get there.

The meeting was held in a hall a little way back off the road.  I got there a bit early and as I had arranged to meet Brenda outside I didn't go directly in.  There was a woman who's job it was to welcome people as they approached the door and she instantly welcomed me.

After exchanging names I spent the time waiting for Brenda chatting to her.  It turned out she was a friend of Brenda's.  In the meantime she is also introducing me to everyone else as they arrived.  Even in the Spiritulalist church I used to go to people weren't as welcoming and friendly as these people were.  I already felt at home way before Brenda arrived with another one of her friends.

Big hugs from Brenda and her looking concerned over the amount of weight I have lost and how weak I look at the moment.  Love her heart she even had tears in her eyes for me.  I reassured her that I really was almost quite fit now and getting better fast.  Seems there is no secrets in that church, as before everything started half the people there already knew how ill I had been, lol.

As we walked in we were all handed a little brochure of the monthly news with other bits of flyers tucked inside along with two donation envelopes.  One for that morning's meeting donation and another one specifically for if one wanted to donate to the building of a new permanent meeting hall, already well under construction.

It kicked off with a little introduction of what was happening that week with regards to the speaker and a warm welcome to any newbies.  All faces turned to me at that point with big smiles all around.

Some lively songs were first on the adenda and there were TV monitors all around the room that flashed up the words, so none of your normal church hymn books involved.  The music came from a piano organ and a guitar along with a female singer up at the front.

Singing was enthusiastic with hand clapping and a gentle bit of hand waving, British style, which means very genteel and not frenzied as one sometimes sees on TV in some American Baptist churches.  Although there was one lady dressed in all lace and frills doing her own interpretation of ballet dancing with large chiffon scarves, and a couple of kids were also dancing too.

After the singing Brenda had to disappear, along with all the kids, as it was her turn this week to run the creche, but she made sure everyone around me was looking after me.

Next was the speaker.  He was amazing.  It seems that for the next 24 weeks he will be taking us through the Book of Luke, with a special guest visiting on the last week.  We covered the first four verses of chapter one.  I have to say that I was enthralled.  I haven't read Luke since I was a child and because of that have only really thought of it as the Book that held the Christmas story.

I had no idea that Luke was actually a Doctor and very much a scentific man along with also not being a Christian himself.  Neither had I been aware of how he had travelled around trying to find the people that had first hand knowledge and experiences of Christ from the stories that had reached him before he wrote about them.

Although he had not met Christ himself he did travel with Paul (Saul) on his second and third missionary journeys.  Paul was also an unbeliever before he himself had seen Christ risen from the dead with his own eyes.

The Book of Luke was only written 30 years after the crucifixion so there were still plenty of people around that had actually known, seen or heard Christ speak, along with many having been present at the crucifixion and seen him rise again after death.

Fascinating!

Another song while the bucket was handed out.  Which iincidentally is done in such a way that no one feels compelled to give and in actual fact he made a point of not putting the bucket near me.  I would assume because today I was a guest.   I would imagine that some give every week, some give some weeks and others give via standing order.

More information given out regarding next week and other events going on in and around the area, then cup of tea and biscuit time which is when Brenda joined us again.

Whilst having a cup of tea I got to know some more people.  None of them pushy and all of them so very nice.

All in all I had a whale of a time.  Loved it!

Glad you found it stimulating Sandy and all the people were very welcoming. It sounds very like a church my niece and her husband work at with the words up on monitors and suchlike. I was quite surprised by it all when I went to a Christening there.

I think that if they really want to get people back into church that this is the way to go.

Remove the man made dogma and go back to the basic Christ teachings only. Get rid of the ministers robes, candles, incense swinging, the sermons and even the bread and the wine, and replace it with ministers in suits, Bible study and make it more of a community gathering of like minded people.

In all the years I attended church as a child with the school, not once was a Bible passage explained or discussed. People would love the explainations of the Bible and to be treated like the intelligent beings they are.

People nowadays are far more educated than they were on the creation of the church. They don't want to be sermonised to, they don't want to be told how they should live and think. They don't want to go to church every week being told they are sinners and low life in the eyes of God.

I so enjoyed the speaker and the information he imparted this week that I am really keen to go again next week and hear the talk on the next few verses of Luke. I am so hoping I can get there for that. I really don't want to miss it. Although podcasts of it are put on line afterwards so I wouldn't actually miss it. But I have to admit I would miss the atmosphere of the actual church.

Loved reading about your experience with this church, Sandy.
Sounds like one of the churches I attend sometimes.

I was raised in a church that had more contemporary music.
Although, they did sing some of the old favorite hymns
once in a while.

When I attend the church I go to now,
I like that they are friendly
but they can tell I want to be left alone.
I sit in the back.
No one pressures me to come every Sunday,
to join any of their get-togethers, or to give money.

It's wonderful when one finds a church
that suits their spiritual and emotional needs.

I hope you continue to have a good experience at that church.

I just can't believe that there is one of these churches right on my door step.  Or will be when I move back to the flat in a few weeks time.

Funnily enough they have only just recently opened this new church of theirs.  The whole church was/is based in the nearest town to me until they decided to expand it to have a second one my village as well.

Joining a meeting such as this and making new friends is on my vision board and part of my plans to give my boring life a boost.  I thought I would have a heck of time trying to find one.
