Facts

Shakespeare made up the name “Jessica” for his play Merchant of Venice.
Shakespeare probably based it on the biblical name ISCAH, which would have been spelled Jescha in his time.

One of my Grandmothers left school at 12 years old and went directly into service as a scullery maid.  After a few years she was promoted to between maid (Tweenie).

My other Grandmother did a stint as a servant about the age of 14 for a while.

Lanhydrock, that they mention, I have visited.  It's huge and one is allowed to visit the downstairs as well as the upstairs and attics (servants quarters). I have also visited Polesden Lacey

One member of my family a few generations ago also was down on his luck for a few months and lived in a work house for that time.
