PostSubject: Church Meeting in the Dining Hall   27/08/17, 02:09 pm

This week I tried out the Church Meeting held in our complex dining hall Sunday mornings.

I loved the singing in this one as it's more the conventional hymns which I am very fond of.  The Bible reading was going through chapter 8 of revelations.  Very few conventional churches will touch revelations as it seems to be all hell and damnation and quite terrifying and they think their congregation would get even smaller if they touch on revelations nowadays.  It isn't really terrifying if one is a Christian and believes in the rapture and judgement before the last trumpets are sounded and the 7 bowls are thrown to earth.

But then I suppose if one isn't a Christian one wouldn't believe in the Book of Revelations anyway, so either way the thought of it wouldn't be terrifying.

I personally find the Book of Revelations and explanations of it fascinating.  I'm quite teed off that I missed the going through of the first 7 chapters, but seemingly they are posted as audio on line so I could catch up if I wanted to.

I'm in two minds which meeting I like best.

The first one is very casual and this second one is slightly more on the conventional service side.  Although both meetings are non-denominational, as in not religious but just a gathering of people that believe in Jesus Christ, his teachings and the Word of God only, with no man made rules or dogma.

Basically I see those of us that are Born Again exactly as the original "Church" of Christ that was growing while Christ was still on earth.  In those days they were called Nazarenes because Jesus came out of Nazareth.  It wasn't until a few years later when Paul was preaching in Antioch, and subsequently arrested, that the word Christian is first mentioned in the Book of Acts.  I believe it was the Romans that gave them that name.

Then of course the Romans used that word when they set up the official Roman Catholic Church.

I hate that we are lumped together as Christians with the Catholics because they don't follow Christ's teachings at all.  They put Mary above Christ, along with worshiping Saints and kissing the feet of idols and statues and so on. It's no different than the Muslims kissing the black stone and worshiping Muhammad as equal to God.  They've even changed the original 10 commandments to suit.  To top it all they even worship the Pope as God because they are taught that the Pope has total authority by God on earth and his words are God's words. If that's not blasphemy I don't know what is.

It's simple.  If you believe in God and you believe Christ was God in human form then you follow the word and teachings of God/Christ to the letter of the Bible.  You don't make up rules or change the wording to suit.  All religion = Man made rules.

But anyway - The long and the short of it is that I thoroughly enjoyed today's meeting but am still unsure of which I want to frequent on a regular basis.

Good on you for trying out different meetings Sandy. I couldn't do it as I'm way past anything to do with anything that resembles a church environment of any kind.

To me the bible is a good book written by various men. They wrote things as they understood them at the time but with their own interpretation of events and possibly their own agenda in some cases too. I don't see it as the word of God. *waits to be struck down for blasphemy*

For me going to Church Martha is a means to an end really with my overall plans.  I'm not a believer in group prayer, believing instead that prayer should be personal private.  But that is something I put up with as part of today's church gatherings.  I like the socialising of it, I enjoy singing hymns and I love the Bible ministry part of it.

I'm not and never will be over keen on the display type worship that church gatherings are.  To me it would make more sense if church gatherings were more socialising with people that believe the same and discussion of Biblical thoughts and ideas.  But I have to respect others that do enjoy group prayer.

A group prayer at the beginning to invite Jesus to be with us and a group prayer of thanks at the end would be sufficient I think, but someone openly speaking words of prayer in my name I feel extremely uncomfortable with.

The first church isn't so much into prayer but the second one is being that it is a slightly more conventional type service.

Assuming you are still breathing this morning Wendy, lol.  I've always loved the Bible and found it fascinating, (never believed a word of it until recently) but now I'm studying it I'm finding it even more fascinating, especially becoming more interested in science as I have just recently.  You would be shocked at how much scientific research, astrological, geological, and so on, along with historic documents are directly linked to many Biblical accounts.

Most people tend to think of the Bible as simply a religious (Holy) book, such as Genesis, Exodus, and the four gospels, but if one reads the lesser known or bothered with books, like Acts which tells of Paul's journey from Jeruselem to Rome, and his arrest and subsiquent house arrest, how part of his journey (detailed) was by ship and how the ship ended up wreaked in Malta and so on, those sort of stories are all backed up by other historical documents.

A great deal of the new testament is copies of letters that were sent by someone who travelled with him to people he knew, a bit like we would send letters to friends telling them of our holiday travels.  Same with Luke.  He was a scientist in his day (never met Jesus) and he used to not only travel around that part of the world like a detective, tracing people that had travelled with Jesus or witnessed Jesus first hand to get the truth of the stories he had heard about.  He would then put it in writing in letters he was sending to his friend who was a high up official in the Roman court.

It really is a brilliant book to read.

You know I side with Wendy on this one as I too see the Bible and subsequent other books as ones written/interpreted by men.

I don't doubt the fact that Astrology was a huge part of some of the contents in those books Sandy as that is how they navigated in those days.

Overall my doubt is more about the interpretations and then facts pushed down our throats in church.

I'm still breathing. lol I don't doubt the truth of the stories historically Sandy. I just think a lot can be explained by science now whereas that knowledge wasn't available back then. It's more about interpretation than veracity. Looking at the events with a greater knowledge and coming up with different conclusions.

As a good read it's difficult to beat it though. It's got everything.

This is why I think it's so important for people to read the Bible for themselves, then the only interpretation of what one reads is their own and not some religious order.

I stumbled across this video this morning which I found really interesting.

I Can't Believe In A God Who Picked a Faulty Bible to Communicate With Us (Craig Evans, PhD)

It's too long for me to watch just now but I'll try and get back to it.
