I'm going to make this as I think it looks fun, and easy of course.  Although I don't think I will do the waist band as wide as she has.

You  know I think I still have an apron here somewhere but seeing as I never wear one I haven't bothered looking for it.

I love aprons but you never see them in the shops now anymore. If one wants a half pinny now one has to make it themselves. Although I'm sure we can still buy them on line somewhere.

British woman stopped wearing aprons, I would say, early 60s. I know by the time I was married in '67, I only saw from then on aprons on my Mother's generation still and rarely on someone of my young age at the time. My Sister Barbara, who is 13 years older than me aways wore one while she was a stay at home Mum until her kids were old enough for her to go out to work. Although I also owned a couple of half pinnys too in my early married life.

Thinking about it. It's was probably the going from being stay at home Mums to being working Mums that completely did away with aprons here in Britain. I personally don't know anyone that wears one now, except me of course.

I find it terrific for keeping my skirt clean from hairs with the dog laying all over me and great for wiping my damp hands down. If I'm wearing one with pockets then I also keep my mobile in it along with other bits and pieces I might want to keep handy. It comes in handy as padding on my lap for a hot plate if I happen to eat off my lap. I wear one all the time I am indoors now.

I threw a couple away when I had a clear out last october because they were full green striped working ones that I used to wear when running the cafe in Hastings. I only have three now two of which are full ones. One comes from a National Trust shop and the other is a rather posh one that one of my girls bought me from a fancy shop. The third is the half red one I made a short while ago and did a post about.

I'm looking forward to making more when I can find some decent second hand material of nice patterns and colours.

The difference with the threads here is the width of the white part for the posting , the blue part of the left is narrower , so when the graphic window pops up it has more room . A Fun Unusual Apron Spring13

My mum used to always wear an apron Sandy and over here men wear one when they do a barbecue sometimes; to stop getting burned while in their shorts and singlet.

Yeah, Ted always wears an apron when they have a B.B.Q.

I only started wearing them again for cleaning because I was pretty liberal with the bleach and got fed up with ruining my clothes with splashes of bleachy water, and only because when I left the cafe I still owned the two I wore there for work. At that time I would never have thought of wearing one and certainly wouldn't have gone and bought one.

Now I wear them because I just like wearing them again. And of course I'm getting even more into them now I've taken up sewing again because they are fun and easy to make with these bits of material I'm finding in the 2nd hand shops.

I think it is a cute apron, Sandy.

My mother never wore an apron.
But she never really cooked very much.

My daughter did wear one while cooking
during the American Thanksgiving this year.
It was a very cute one. She looked cute in it.
These things often come around again,
even if they are more for looks than practicality.

Some American women seem to be still well into aprons.  All videos and patterns for them seem to be from Americans.  But then they also seem to be into crafts of all sorts far more than us Brits.

But then I also don't think there is the stigma of being a housewife in America that there is here in England.  Women are very much looked down on here if they don't at least have a part time job, if not full time, to help support the family.  And of course this leaves a lot less time for crafts and homemaking.

I find that such a shame, as if one is careful, as a homemaker (housewife) one can actually save the same amount of money as one can earn by having a part time job.

When working, one needs travel money, lunch money, working clothes, and then of course no time to cook from scratch so more money spent on shopping, child care, and so on.  It's ridiculous.  But as I say, if one is a stay at home Mum here then you are looked down on.
