I started learning Hebrew yesterday.  I was surprised to find that each letter of their alphabet has two ways of writing it.  The hand written letters are different from the print letters.  So when you hand write the letters (cursive) they are totally different to those you type or read in a book (block).

Very strange and it also means instead of learning 22 letters one has to learn 44.

Even more complicated is that although there are officially 22 letters of their alphabet some letters depending on them being pronounce hard or soft are also different from each other.  So if you add them all up it comes to 31, which makes it 62 different letters one has to learn.

Having said that, it actually does make reading and pronouncing words easy because you know instantly if a letter is silent or for instance if a K sounds like Kite or Bach.

Then of course one has to learn to write backwards.  It's a very interesting language.

I thought for fun I'd just add an image of their alphabet or
אלף בית
Pronounced Uhl-ef-bet

Well, the other day when her, Jess, and I were out at lunch Aimee said to me.....

Aimee:  You have to learn Hebrew Nan.
Me: Why?
Aimee:  Because I'm going to start learning it and I want you to as well as it will be nicer if we both learn.
Me:  OK, babe.

Now, that may sound as if I am absolutely puggled agreeing like that immediately.  But............  Well over a year ago I thought I'd like to learn Hebrew for fun, mostly in order to be able to read the Old Testament in the orginal language.  I was already a member of Duolingo so I went in and clicked to start learning it.   But I never did get around to actually starting, because as you know I hadn't been too well when first moving in here.  I then forgot about it.

Aimee asking me to learn it simply reminded me that I intended to do that anyway.

I'm starting with Duolingo simply because that is all totally free, but if I find that I take it seriously then I don't mind spending some money on CDs, dictionary and such.

So far this last couple of days I have just done a few minutes a day on doing part of a lesson.  For instance, Lesson One is in 6 very small parts, and as I'm just seeing if my brain can handle such an alien language I'm just checking it out.  If I find I like it then I will give myself a timed hour a day, organise written exercises, find some spoken Hebrew Youtube videos, and so on.

To tell the truth it's just another type of hobby and if it takes me 3 years to learn, it's all good fun.  Who knows I might get fed up after 3 weeks, lol.

Ah. It is more fun learning it with someone else. Quite alien as you say though so good luck with it. I hope you find you enjoy it enough to persevere.

Well, I've got through the first lesson but more with guess work than actually remembering the words.

I'm going to go over that lesson several times to make sure I can recognise and actually say the words properly before I move on.

I think the secret is to learn the alphabet as the priority though, because once one has learned that then sounding the words is simple when reading them.  Then one just has to remember what each word means.

I've memorised 7 letters of the alphabet so far, which is really 14, block and cursive.

I'm not sure whether to carry on learning the cursive though as I'm never going to write it, neither am I ever going to read a hand written message.  Nowadays everything is typed.

I will see how easily my slug of a brain assimilates it all.
